Artistic Porn
In the spirit of full disclosure, I saw some porn last night. As did my wife. As did another staff member and her husband. We even included another staff member and her husband who is an elder at our church.
Not what you expected, huh? We spent Friday evening at Artspace in downtown Raleigh. And the porn we were looking at wasn’t really porn at all. We saw the exhibition of Artspace’s regional emerging artist in residence, Casey Porn. You weren’t really worried were you?
I have to admit, I am usually not the type who frequents art shows. And I usually don’t get it (art) most of the time. But instead of doing the usual Friday night activity of renting a movie or going to a hockey game, we ventured to Raleigh with some good friends to have some dinner, catch up on life, expand our horizons a bit and even catch some late night dessert (a very difficult thing to do believe it or not).
One other thing that I don’t get. How can you (an artist) put a price tag on your art? Almost everything that was there had a price tag associated with it but I don’t understand how you come up with a price on art? Especially if you are alive? I can undertand putting a price tag or value on Rembrandt and Michelangelo but just don’t get how you think something is $175.00 or $7,000.00. Shouldn’t the price tag or value of something be left to the buyer? If your art touches me and means something to me, I maybe willing to pay more than your price tag. I guess it’s something I’ll never understand.
Anyway we had a great time with our friends, enjoyed some great Chinese food and even decided that we will return to another First Friday this year. And Casey, if by chance you read this, I really enjoyed your exhibit.
